BLACKTOP MOJO: Forging The Future of American Hard Rock

There are bands that chase trends.  Then there are bands like Blacktop Mojo—a group that has spent more than a decade carving out its own path, earning every fan one unforgettable performance at a time.

Hailing from Palestine, Texas, Blacktop Mojo has never relied on gimmicks or shortcuts. Since forming in 2012, the band has become one of modern hard rock's most respected independent success stories, blending Southern rock swagger, a grunge grit, bluesy soul, and arena sized hooks into a sound that is unmistakably their own.

I first met the guys in 2017 as they played a small club out in far west suburbs of Chicago and they couldn’t have been any more gracious than they were.  Since they I have forged a friendship with the guys and several interviews and hangs.

At the center of it all is vocalist Matt James, whose powerhouse voice can soar with emotion one moment and roar with conviction the next. Alongside drummer Nathan Gillis, bassist Catt Murtis, and guitarists Ryan Kiefer and Malcolm Booher, Blacktop Mojo has built its reputation the old fashioned way, through relentless touring, authentic songwriting, and an unwavering connection with fans.  And that connection runs deep.

I had a recent talk with Matt and asked about member changes over the years and seeing the guys having kids, getting married life happens fast.  James say’s “the things that matter are at home to you now.”  We went on to say “it’s a balancing act now, when we were young and dumb men and all that matter was the band.  That still matters to us a great deal, but now we balance it with the things that really matter to us at home.”

The band's journey began with their debut album, I Am (2014), but it was Burn the Ships (2017) that truly put Blacktop Mojo on the map. Songs like "Where the Wind Blows,” “Burn The Ships” and their unforgettable cover of "Dream On" introduced listeners to a band capable of balancing crushing riffs with deeply emotional melodies. The momentum continued through Under the Sun (2019), Blacktop Mojo (2021), and Pollen (2024), each release showcasing a band that refused to stand still creatively.

What separates Blacktop Mojo from many of their peers is their ability to sound both familiar and fresh. You can hear echoes of Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and ZZ Top woven into their DNA, yet every song unmistakably belongs to Blacktop Mojo. They've never tried to imitate the legends, they've taken those influences and forged a sound that's uniquely theirs.

Now, Blacktop Mojo is preparing to usher in its next chapter with Discount Fireworks, due out October 23.
The album's title alone hints at what fans have come to expect from the Texas rockers: something explosive, unpredictable, and impossible to ignore.
Early singles such as "S.A.D." and “Ten Year Itch” have already demonstrated that the band isn't interested in playing it safe. The tracks delivers massive riffs, emotional honesty, and the signature vocal performance fans have come to expect from Matt James, proving Blacktop Mojo continues to evolve without losing sight of what made listeners fall in love with the band in the first place. The band has also been previewing new material during its 2026 live shows, building anticipation for what could become one of its strongest releases yet.  While Discount Fireworks promises new songs and fresh ideas, it also represents something bigger.

It's another chapter in a story built on perseverance.  Blacktop Mojo has weathered industry shifts and challenges of remaining fiercely independent. Through it all, they've continued writing honest songs, selling out venues, and building one of the most loyal fanbases in hard rock.

If you've ever seen Blacktop Mojo live, you understand why so many fans keep coming back. Their concerts aren't about flashy production or over the top theatrics. They're about personal connection.  Whether it's a festival crowd or a packed club, the band brings the same intensity every night. James commands the stage with effortless charisma, while the rhythm section and twin guitars provide the soundtrack for singalongs, fist pumps, the signature “Matt James Stomp” as I have tagged it and unforgettable moments.

It's rock and roll the way it was meant to be.  Real.  Raw.  Honest.

As Discount Fireworks approaches its October 23 release, the excitement surrounding Blacktop Mojo continues to grow. Few independent bands have maintained this level of consistency while continuing to evolve, and that's a testament to both their musicianship and their dedication to their fans.

If the band's history is any indication, Discount Fireworks won't simply be another album, it'll be another statement from a band that's spent the last decade proving that authenticity, hard work, and unforgettable songs still matter.

And if Blacktop Mojo has taught us anything over the years, it's this: When they light the fuse…. You'd better be ready for the explosion.
