Sound Fury Magazine Preview — September 18–20, 2026 | Douglass Park, Chicago
Chicago, get ready to get loud. Riot Fest returns to Douglass Park September 18–20, bringing together a ridiculous mix of punk, rock, metal, alternative, hip-hop and everything in between. This will be Sound Fury Magazine's second year in a row covering the iconic festival. With more than 100 artists spread across the festival's stages, Riot Fest once again delivers the kind of eclectic lineup where building a schedule means accepting that you're going to miss something you desperately wanted to see. And that's exactly what makes Riot Fest Riot Fest. FRIDAY: START THE WEEKEND LOUD Our own Evan J. Thomas will be on the grounds Friday as Riot Fest comes out swinging with Twenty One Pilots, Iggy Pop and Rise Against leading a stacked day that also features Pixies, Alkaline Trio, The All-American Rejects, the Sex Pistols, Santigold, Motion City Soundtrack, Bayside, GWAR, Slick Rick, 3OH!3, Bratmobile, Mariachi El Bronx, Fleshwater and plenty more. I'm excited to photograph and see the legendary Iggy Pop live and hoping for the one and only Dave Grohl to wander through the media area before or after Violet Grohls set. Whether you're there for punk legends, alternative favorites or something completely unexpected, Friday is built to get the weekend moving at full speed. SATURDAY: TOOL, PUNK LEGENDS & EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN Saturday might be one of the most musically diverse days of the entire festival. Tool, and Nas headline a day featuring Social Distortion, Bad Religion, Sugar, Bright Eyes, Descendents, Gogol Bordello, Public Image Ltd., PUP, Thrice, Less Than Jake, The Suicide Machines, Afroman, Destroy Boys, The Chats and more. I removed a certain one name artist out of this list because as we all know there is an over 50% chance he will even show up to his set time. There are also some special full-album performances throughout the weekend, including Descendents performing Everything Sucks, PUP performing The Dream Is Over, and other artists bringing complete-album sets to the festival. SUNDAY: GO OUT WITH A BANG Sunday brings Pierce The Veil, Alanis Morissette and Elvis Costello & The Imposters to the top of the bill, with Patti Smith and Her Band, The Format, Taking Back Sunday, Pennywise, Insane Clown Posse, The Beths, Bowling For Soup, Sincere Engineer, The Flatliners and dozens more filling out the day. And for emo/alternative fans, Taking Back Sunday are scheduled to perform Louder Now in its entirety, a set that should make for one hell of a Sunday afternoon/evening. MORE THAN JUST THE MUSIC Riot Fest isn't simply about standing in front of a stage for three days. The festival's Beyond The Fest programming brings community organizations, local performers, interactive activities and other experiences into the weekend. And yes, there's still the unmistakable Riot Fest atmosphere: massive crowds, carnival-style attractions, food, drinks, multiple stages and the constant possibility of stumbling onto your new favorite band. For first timers, Riot Fest is all ages, and the festival provides free water stations throughout the grounds. Riot Fest has always been about the collision of generations and genres. It's where legendary names share a weekend with emerging artists, where punk can sit next to metal, hip-hop can share the bill with alternative rock, and where you can spend the afternoon discovering something you've never heard before before ending the night watching an artist you've loved for decades. September 18–20. Douglass Park. Chicago. Three days. More than 100 artists. Multiple stages. One hell of a weekend. Riot Fest 2026 is ready to get loud. And Sound Fury Magazine will be there to capture the noise.
