May 1st 2026 marked the release of metal band Sevendust’s highly anticipated 15th studio album, ONE, under Napalm Records and produced by Michael Baskette. The band unveiled four EPs featuring a total of four tracks over the course of four months leading up to the long awaited launch beginning with the album's third track, “Is This The Real You”. Despite nearly 1.3 million plays on Spotify since its release and the single’s strong response, the album marks a first for the band as their only record to not land the Billboard 200. Given the band's deep rooted fanbase and decades of consistency, the album's chart performance does not fully reflect the album’s artistic intent or execution. From the beginning, ONE reinforces Sevendust’s established identity: distinct intros that set the tone for what’s to come from each track. Each intro builds anticipation before giving way to heavy riffs and rhythmic precision, true to the signature Sevendust sound. A standout track, and my personal favorite, is track ten, “Misdirection.” The song distinguishes itself due to its diversity through a more dynamic and layered approach than its neighboring tracks. The song opens with a repetitive rhythmic pattern before guitarist John Connolly steps in on vocals. John is soon joined in harmony by guitarist Clint Lowery, while the two deliver melodic vocals in unison that carry control and gradually build in intensity. Soon after, the rhythmic repetition is broken by heavy hitting riffs. Lajon Witherspoon later then joins the track at its peak with his notoriously polished and powerful delivery to carry the track to another instrumental break. Overall ONE maintains their signature metal roots and remains true to the classic Sevendust sound. Nearly three decades later Lajon Witherspoon’s vocals still remain unmatched and the band as a whole is better than ever. Every element in the mix is well balanced and remains equally powerful without overshadowing one another. Despite being the first album to not make it on the Billboard 200, Sevendust continues to make their mark and create a sound that remains distinctly their own and consistently impactful.
